WHAT WE DO AND WHERE WE DO IT

Q. What exactly is PetPix At Home? Do you really come to my home or apartment to take pictures of my pet?

A. Yes, if you live in the Chicagoland local area*. We have found that most pets are most comfortable in their own environments. So, while this is more work for us, it usually produces portraits that look more like the cat or dog you are used to seeing.

Q. Portraits? I thought these were more like snapshots?

A. We can go either way. Many people find that candid photos that are professionally done become their favorites - and ours, too. Posed portrait-like sessions can be lovely but they usually require extra time and are not as certain of satisfaction.

Q. What do you mean by professional candid photos?

A. When your dog or cat is at home with you, they tend to be more relaxed, even with a stranger (us) there, too. With your help we'll try to get the pet interested in a favorite toy or sleeping spot or maybe sitting or playing with you. We'll take a lot of pictures. Then, when we get back to our editing computers, we will try to bring out the best in that group of photos.

For instance, here's a before and after of Rosie and Molly enjoying their yard. It was shot "on the fly" and could not be posed. But if you move your mouse over the dogs you will see the original (the "before"). Both nice pictures, but - we think - the one we edited shows them off much better. >>
Rosie and Molly felt that their stick was a lot more important than posing for a picture. With a little help from our computer, this happy moment has now become a treasured memory for their people.

WHAT YOU GET

Q. So, what happens after you leave?

A. In about a week we send you some Proofs to look at. These can come by US Mail or by e-mail** if you prefer. The base price for the home session gives you one pose that you select. Of course, additional poses can also be chosen which is explained in the pricing chart further down this page.

Once you let us know which pose(s) you want, we print the pictures. We can also make adjustments to the pictures if you have something in mind that we missed in our initial editing.

After you give us your approval the pictures are mailed out within a few days.

Q. And what prints do I get from this?

A. You'll see in the pricing chart (below) that the home session fee includes one 8x10 in your choice of matte, glossy or faux oil paint -or- four 4x6 'borderless' glossy prints of the same pose.
Please click here for SAMPLE PHOTO SLIDE SHOW.
Q. What if I want a bigger print?

A. We can go up to 16x20 which does require an additional price and takes 2-4 weeks longer because we send out for the larger printing.

CAN I GET ADDITIONAL PRINTS LATER?

Q. What if I want more prints? From the same session, I mean.

A. Easily done. The pricing chart farther down this page shows the costs which are roughly half your original investment and are good for up to a year after your initial order.

Q. What if I want more than one pose from that session?

A. Certainly. Again, please see the pricing chart for details.

Q. What is the 'faux oil paint' finish you mentioned earlier?

A. Glossy or matte finishes are the most common. We can also create a ‘faux oil paint’ appearance that some people like for 8x10 or larger prints. It’s not actually oil paint, just a computer trick that looks a bit like oil on canvas which you can see in Rosie's picture. To see the difference from the original, put your mouse anywhere over her. >>

This picture of a sleepy girl with her toy looks interesting in a new way when we change a copy of her photo into a faux oil painting using a computer trick.
We can also provide some unusual effects such as stripping out most of the color to produce an old-fashioned Sepia tone for most of the photo with original color cloned back in to highlight your pet. To see the subtle difference, put your mouse over this photo.

That technique works best for more distant poses like the one shown of this far away kitty. Because it requires a great deal of additional custom work there is an extra charge. >>

This far away kitty looks even more dreamlike when we change a copy of his photo into a sepia tone picture with cloned color put back to highlight the cat.

ARE THEY FRAMED?

Q. I notice that some of the pictures in your ad and on this web site seem to be in frames? Is that part of the service?

A. Our goal is to provide you with a new ready-to-frame 8x10 print or several 4x6 prints that are good for showing off your special pet to family and friends. We are not framers. If you decide you want them professionally framed, we can recommend experts that we use for ourselves.

If you want us to provide complete sealed-back framing, UV glass and beveled matting for your new PetPix At Home photos, we would be happy to outsource it for you but would have to add a substantial convenience fee to our price. Plus, of course, whatever the framer charged.

Q. And if I’m not happy with the end result?

A. Once you approve the Proof(s) you owe us for the whole job. But, if we finally cannot satisfy you we will return your deposit. (Of course, our policy can not apply to any lack of satisfaction you might have with a third party, such as a framing service.)

CAN I GET DIGITAL COPIES?

Q. What about digital copies of my photos?

A. Yes. If you want a CD-ROM with all the poses you’ve previously purchased, we can provide it for $29 with everything in ‘.jpg’ file format. And that price is also good for up to one year after you got the original prints from us.

Q. Can I do what I want with the pictures on the CD-ROM?

A. Almost. The images you have already paid for are yours, of course. However, the digital versions of your PetPix At Home pictures are copyrighted by The Visibility Group, Inc. and can be used by you to make unlimited personal prints but you are not licensed to make copies for sale or exhibition nor to distribute digital copies.
