A Sampling of Complaints and Comments Received by the
Post Office CAC for Neighborhoods of Chicago's 1st Ward.

Your local post office Customer Advisory Council (CAC) for the 1st Ward receives complaints and comments from our neighbors and fellow customers. These come in by eMail to the CAC, through contact with Alderman Manny Flores 1st Ward office and, sometimes, by personal contact with CAC members. The CAC presents those issues to the USPS managers and supervisors at their joint meetings on the second or third Wednesday of each month. Here is an edited and condensed sampling of those items. Some have already been resolved.

My mail carrier is simply NOT delivering my mail. That's their job and if they can't do their job should they be employed? It's not just a mail carrier issue either, the people who assemble the mail for the carrier to deliver each day are also not doing their job. It has been so consistent that, if I didn't know better, it would be easy to assume that the policy for sending registered mail was to hold them at the post office in a place where no one can see them.

This has been completely infuriating, continues to be a problem, and doesn't seem that anyone at the post office can, or is, doing anything about it. This is the USPS, the "best" postal system in the world. (60647)

I spoke with Customer Care Rep Ms. Kelly Wells today and she was extremely patient, nice, and helpful. It would be lovely if more employees were as kind. (60622)

I have had so many problems with the postal service since moving to Wicker Park almost a year ago. Missing bills, missing letters from the bank, missing packages, all sorts. This is terrible! I just wanted to add my two cents to the loads of complaints in an effort to stop this postal insanity. It truly makes me steaming mad every time I come home and, once again, no mail is in my mailbox. And everyone in my building gets the wrong mail!

The problem seems to lie not in the workers, but the managers and anyone associated with hiring and training. I want the post office to up their standards! I want them to hire competent people who are willing to learn. The unemployment rate is so high, and I know there are qualified people out there looking for jobs. This mess could be easily turned around with the right people in place. If I didn't have a job, I swear I'd do it myself.

When mail issues make a person think twice before ordering packages, getting mail redirected, and accepting financial information -- that's when it's become too big a problem. Please help the USPS get their Wicker Park office in order!! I miss the joy of getting mail on time and every day. (60622)

I have been extremely unhappy with the postal service for 60622 since I have moved to Wicker Park 1.5 years ago. I have worked with Wicker Park Station managers in trying to resolve problems and they did for a few months but they are back... lost mail, mis-delivered mail, receiving mail from other tenants in my building and receiving mail from other addresses blocks away. (60622)

On April 3 I got a catalog with items on sale from February 22 through March 15. Of course, the reward coupons were useless! (60622)

In addition to the receipt of wrong mail which is already well documented on this site, it strikes me that the carrier should be able to properly pick up outgoing mail. When I was a kid in Rockford I never had to think twice about it. If there was an outgoing letter in the mailbox and the flag was up, the mail man took it with him. Here in Chicago I can’t take such a thing for granted and I wonder if the mail carriers are simply not trained in the most basic elements of their jobs. Once I wrote a note explaining how it works and attached it to a plate of cookies so I’d be sure it was read. The plate disappeared but the problem persisted and still does. Now I leave the mail on top of the box or hanging out clearly visible but of course any rain turns it into a complete mess. I really wish it would work the way it is supposed to. (60622)

Received a Sorry We Missed You notice while I was home. The bell didn't ring but I found the notice before the carrier had gotten past the next house. When I asked him for the registered/proof of delivery letter he said "Oh, it's probably at the station. I tried to deliver it yesterday." When I told him that I was also home yesterday when the mail came and reminded him that he didn't ring the bell then either, he said to sign the slip and he would try to find it and bring it back. I also showed him the mail he had just given me for one of the neighbors. Update: To my surprise and to his credit, he hand-delivered the package to my door the next night.

P.S. Exactly the same thing happened the very next week! (60622)

Yesterday I received medication that belonged to a man on another street. I called him and he came to pick it up and said that they also have many problems with their mail. (60618)

For the last five days no one in our apartment building has gotten mail. Sometimes we find everyone's mail dumped in a pile in our foyer. When the mail is actually placed in our boxes it is sorted incorrectly and we have to trade mail with each other. With as bad as the service is, why isn't anything more drastic being done to repair our ailing post office? (60622)

Had a reasonably pleasant experience in the Wicker Park post office the other day. Line was short at midday, counter clerk Sonja was friendly and informative. The place was a mess and the stamp machine was out of service which is why I went to the counter, but, for a change, it was quick and easy. Of course, when I got home my neighbor brought me half of my mail that he had gotten and I found that I had been delivered mail for someone who lives 20 blocks away. (60622)

We are starting to get other people's mail again on a routine basis and last week I received about a 12 inch stack of mail one day that clearly was intended for delivery 6-7 weeks earlier. (60622)

I arrived at the Wicker Park post office at 11:00 Saturday morning. At 11:30 I was still in line waiting for customer assistance and at 11:35 I left, frustrated by the waste of time. There were two people working behind the counter and another person that would periodically retrieve packages. The line was approximately 15 people long. The two people working behind the counter moved at a methodical pace that showed no urgency to assist the customers through the line. After 20 minutes in line I requested that they check to see if there was any additional support that could come out front. After 30 minutes I reiterated my request. I was informed that a supervisor was paged but had not responded. So I left. I think UPS is more interested in my business than USPS! I attempted to fill out the necessary forms while waiting in line. Both pens were broken. There was garbage strewn across the counter. Most of the delivery trucks visible on the premises were tagged with graffiti. Not a pleasant experience! (60622)

This post office branch is the 7th level of Hell. My cat could offer more efficient service and she doesn't have opposable thumbs. I would be all for firing them, but what else are they qualified to do? I would use the automatic postage machine, but I have never seen it in working order. (60647)

Mean, Awful, Belittling, Angry, Sad. Not a good way to start off the morning - with the people who work here. Sorry I needed to get my mail...really, sorry to bother you at your job. Horrible. (60622)

They've disappointed me many times. I had to pick up a package that I've been waiting for. They looked in the back for 15 mins and came out with a package that didn't belong to me. Then they said that I would have to come back tomorrow. Now I know why some people go "postal". (60618)

This Post Office is a disgrace to the community and citizens of Wicker Park. The staff is rude, lazy, incompetent and disrespectful to its customers. The employees remove and hide their employee identification badges when asked for their names by customers, the counters are consistently understaffed creating excessive waiting periods (even by Post Office standards) and management is unable to handle the tasks of their positions. The workers complain about their jobs and argue with other employees as well as with customers. This place is a mess. (60622)

I can second most of the woes detailed on this site: important documents and bills returned as "undeliverable" while others' mail clogs our box, voter identification cards that arrive weeks after the election, mail left hanging from the slot (too much effort to push it all the way in?) for anyone to pilfer, packages left in plain view or (better yet) thrown into the gangway to be discovered later by chance. Never once have my formal complaints been satisfactorily redressed. (60647)

I can't tell you how many calls I made to USPS employees who don't get it, didn't care or just hung up on me. I'm officially escalating the nomination from worst USPS outpost in Chicago to the worst in the entire United States. (60622)

I was home when the mail arrived and saw that there was a 'Sorry We Missed You' slip on top for a registered package. I went outside and asked the carrier for the box and asked why he didn't ring my bell. He said that this wasn't his regular route so he didn't have it with him. In his cart I could see several other packets of mail in rubber bands with the same slip on top but no packages. I said that I was going to call Mr. Johnson at Wicker Park Station and the carrier suddenly 'remembered' that he might have the package in his truck and could deliver it later. To my surprise, he came to my door about an hour later with the box. I wonder how many of my neighbors who didn't go out in the street to find the carrier got their packages that day. (60622)

The mail carrier said she delivered a package and rang the bell. I was sitting right here when she dropped the mail off and never heard a bell. The package is gone. No apology, just ‘too bad’. I wish we had a choice of postal service like we do phone and cable. (60618)

Our normal carrier is fantastic, however he doesn't work everyday and sometimes goes on vacation. When he's gone we typically miss mail one or two times a week. I FedEx everything important at great expense just to avoid the USPS. (60622)

I just want my mail. My expectations are pretty simple: I want my mail delivered to me, not to other people, and I don't want mail that has an address on it that is not mine. (60622)

I am not even sure what I can do. I have filed complaints, roughly 6 of them, usually around this time of year when other people's W-2 forms start showing up in my box. Nothing helps, nothing changes. (60622)

My building goes 3 days with no mail delivery some weeks. Tuesday of this week the postman just left a pile of mail for the entire building rubber banded together on the door stoop in the snow. I sorted all the mail for the building. Wednesday, the building received no mail. (60622)

Now I hear of postal rates rising again and it bothers me that I can't count on the United States Postal Service to deliver a simple piece of mail. (60647)

I received back a Christmas card mailed TO MY OWN BUILDING. They couldn't find the address to deliver the letter, but they could find it to return it? I don't understand how that is possible. (60622)

In the past 12 months I've had 5 packages NOT delivered to my home, all were sent Priority Mail. When I track the packages, they all say "delivered". I work from home, so I'm here all day; each instance there was no delivery. When I go to the Post Office, I get the same response - "the carriers are all out we will check with them when they return to see if they remember what they did with the package and someone will call you tomorrow". That game goes on for days, it's never polite, and no one ever calls - I have to continue to wait in long lines or on hold for hours. The latest package was not delivered on Wednesday of this week and I have received no assistance from the Post Office Supervisor, unless you count rudeness as assistance. (60622)

I've heard so many complaints regarding postal service since moving to the Ukrainian Village and now I'm absolutely fed up with the Wicker Park's incompetence. (60622)

Other people's mail? - every day - Every. Single. Day. (60622)

Today is January 26. We have not received any mail since January 18. Please advise. (60622)

The postal employees need to ask themselves if they are getting a fair wage. If not, go on strike. If the answer is yes and the benefits are good, then have some pride in the job you do. If you quit no one will care because we'll just continue to use Federal Express and use more email. (60618)

When we moved into our new home we found a bag that had years of misdelivered mail. Now I get other people's bank statements and wonder where our confidential mail is ending up. I get tired of sorting through other people's mail. I see clearly now why we found the large bag of mail from the former owner. (60622)

We do have one good carrier in the batch that is friendly, conscientious and pays attention to his job. Thank goodness for him. I hope he gets our route permanently. (60618)

A package never arrived despite tracking records noting that it was delivered to me at 7AM. Our post person never delivers mail to us before 2PM. When I went to the office to take issue with this misinformation I was met only with ignorance and laziness - and I was speaking to the SUPERVISOR! (60622)

We are several days behind on delivery. Today is Thursday and we've not gotten mail this week since Monday. Last week we got three weeks worth of periodicals all on the same day. (60647)

My mail always shows up days late, some days not at all. My biggest complaint has to be with the management. When I called to complain I was told that I would need to call back at 8AM the next business day and bring this up to my carrier. I find this lack of customer service unacceptable. If there was a privately-owned mail delivery alternative, I would have switched a long time ago. (60622)

Our new carrier doesn't seem to like to sort the mail for our business. He is always on his cell phone and seems perturbed when you ask him a question. I have yet to see him wear a piece of USPS clothing. (60618)

To alleviate the congestion at the mail boxes for outgoing mail on Division Street, which backs up traffic, move the boxes to the side street on Post Office property and allow cars to loop around them through the Post Office parking lot. (60622)

Where do I begin? The people who work at this post office are not there to help anyone. I came in to pick up my package and waited at the counter for 20 minutes. There was no employee at that counter and no other customers in the lobby but instead of the other counter workers asking if they could help they sat and talked on their cell phones. On top of this I didn't even get my mail yesterday and no one else in my apartment complex got theirs either. (60622)

Please pass along our thanks to the cold, tired carrier who rang our bell at 8:30 last night to let us know that our mail had arrived. He was delivering to our street after finishing his own route because our regular carrier could not do it herself. (60622)

I was waiting in line when I heard an employee using the PA system to shout and complain about an internal discipline problem. Why is that allowed? (60622)

The new customer service rep is very sweet and always calls back to assist us but none of the problems are being resolved so she always has to respond with bad news. (60622)

It's 7PM, it's 30 degrees and windy, our doorbell rings. Mr. Washington is there with 2 packages that need a signature. We invite him in out of the cold while we sign but he declines because he has another hour of packages to deliver. If that was the work ethic throughout the Wicker Park post office then 60622 would instantly go from one of the worst in the country to one of the best. (60622)

Our mail situation is a nightmare. Mail is thrown on our doorstep for anyone to take. We have had several packages stolen and missing mail including payroll checks. Our complaints go unnoticed. (60622)

Another issue was the rude and arrogant tone the post office employee took with me over the phone. when I called about not receiving my mail. She was anything but helpful and made me feel as if I was wasting her time by complaining about my service. (60622)

Mr. Gordon's mail delivery has been impeccable and truly professional. Please keep Mr. Gordon on the route. (60622)

Post Office trucks use up parking spaces on our permit-parking zoned street all morning. (60622)

I am a resident and business owner in the community. I think it would be great to see the USPS pursue a "higher-and-better" mixed-use redevelopment of the land that the Division St. post office and the barbed-wire surrounded parking lots currently occupy. This land is very valuable and it would be a win-win-win public-private proposition to develop this land into something better. (60622)

The carriers who come to our multiple unit building leave their litter in our lobby and can't seem to figure out what box to put the mail in so they just leave it on the floor. It seems to be a different person each time so we don't even have time to learn their names. (60647)

When I called to complain about the important letters I was missing that I know had been mailed two weeks ago, I got switched around to two or three people and then the supervisor hung up on me. (60647)

I think it's getting worse lately. My mail and my neighbors mail have been hanging out of the box where it can easily be stolen or get wet. I walked around the streets near my house and saw a lot of mail just lying on the walks or porches. (60622)
Return To Top Of Page

I tried the ASK-USPS number to get some mail redelivered that needed a signature and that didn't work. When I called the post office the supervisor told me that she couldn't take a redelivery message for the carrier and that I had to call back between 7AM and 9:30AM to talk directly to the carrier. What kind of way is that to run a business? (60647)

It is ridiculous when the mail is delivered so late that the carrier has to wear a little light on his hat like a miner does. (60618, 60647)

I will say that the delivery service seems to have improved lately. Mail is delivered Monday-Saturday during daylight hours. The situation at the post office itself remains dismal. (60622)
Return To Top Of Page

I waited 20 minutes in line in the lobby to return mis-delivered mail, then was told that I had to see a supervisor. I waited 45 minutes for a supervisor who never came out of the office. I finally gave up and left. (60647)

About once a month we get a pink "Sorry We Missed You" slip even though someone was home and the bell did not ring which means we have to go to the post office the next day and wait in line and then wait again until they find our package. (60622)

My carrier is always on the phone and does not pay attention to deliveries. (60618)
Return To Top Of Page

No mail is delivered except for "junk" for one or two (or more) days then I get a huge delivery. (60618, 60622, 60647)

Invitations (or checks or other important documents) arrive too late to be of any use to me. (60618, 60622, 60647)

I have had to transfer all my bills to electronic accounts because my bills arrive weeks late or not at all. (60622)
Return To Top Of Page

Whenever I call the post office and ask for a supervisor they never can come to the phone. If I leave a message I do not get the courtesy of a return call. Never. (60647)

My mail was left on the steps instead of in my mailbox during a rainstorm. Every piece was completely soaked. (60622)

I complained about missing deliveries and then got a huge pile of mail crammed through my slot with many letters ripped and torn. I think it was in reprisal for my complaints. (60618)
Return To Top Of Page

Almost every week we get mail for our neighbors or for our building number but from another street. (60618, 60622)

There is no uniform policy whether carriers should leave packages if no one is home and there is also a problem with scanning packages as delivered when in fact they were not. (60622)
